Kindergarten Program

The New Heights full day Kindergarten / Grade 1 Program is based in play and designed for children with autism spectrum disorder or who have significant delays in language development, social interactions, or communication abilities.

For each student, we develop an Individualized Program Plan (IPP) designed to address their specific educational needs and provide the basis for intervention strategies. Each plan focuses on the individual strengths and interests of the child to foster engagement and address their goals.

Curriculum

Our Kindergarten / Grade 1 programming directly targets Social Communication, Emotional Regulation, and Transactional Supports (SCERTS)® along with adaptive and executive functioning skills

We focus on:

  • Cognitive Skills

  • Self-Help
  • Cooperation
  • Fine & Gross Motor Skills
  • Academic Readiness Skills

The method

To develop organizational and independent work skills, we draw from the principles of TEACCH® (Treatment and Education of Autistic and Communication related Handicapped Children).

We also use a thematic, literature-based curriculum that reinforces rhyme, repetition, and rhythm, and creates a language-rich classroom environment. Song, story, dramatization, and art projects promote greater flexibility and the development of imaginative play skills. We use visual schedules, visual aids, or written words to enhance participation and understanding.

Common Approach

Families in our Preschool and Kindergarten program who have an approved FSCD Specialized Services contract will have the same therapy team working with them at home and in the classroom. The home and classroom goals will be together on one Individualized Service Program Plan (ISPP).
